What is premenstrual syndrome (PMS)?
It is not yet determined what causes premenstrual syndrome (PMS), however it is probably related to the changes in hormone levels that occur before menstruation. Some of the common physical and emotional changes often associated with PMS are:

  • Bloating

  • Weight gain

  • Tenderness of the breasts

  • Abdominal swelling

  • Headaches

  • Constipation

  • Fatigue

  • Swollen hands and feet

  • Depression

  • Irritability

  • Anxiety

How can I cope with premenstrual syndrome?
Although PMS itself cannot be treated, the individual symptoms can be addressed. Dietary changes can help alleviate problems such as water retention, insomnia and food cravings. Reduce or eliminate intake of caffeine, salt, refined sugars and fats. Regular exercise can help relieve tension, elevate mood and improve alertness. In some instances, diuretics or "water pills" have worked to help the body eliminate excess fluids. Vitamins are sometimes prescribed. Whatever treatment you choose to try, it is important to work closely with your doctor to find what works best for you.

What causes vaginal infections?
Most common causes of vaginal infections are yeast, bacteria and fungus. Some ways you can help protect yourself from infections are:

Avoid tight clothing, wearing pantyhose or other synthetic fabrics directly next to the body. These can create a moist environment for infections to occur.

Avoid frequent use of feminine hygiene sprays and bubble baths, which can irritate delicate tissue and upset the balance of the vagina.

Avoid overuse of antibiotics which can upset the balance of normal bacteria in the vagina.
Change tampons frequently and limit their use as much as possible.

Why do I leak urine?
It is estimated that over 12 million Americans have urinary incontinence. Some possible causes of incontinence are:

  • Urinary tract or vaginal infections
  • Effects of medications
  • Constipation
  • Weakness of certain muscles
  • Blocked urethra due to an enlarged prostate
  • Diseases or disorders of the nerves or muscles
  • A result of some types of surgeries

This medical problem is compounded by its effect on the woman's emotional, psychological and social well being. The great majority of incontinence can be treated successfully. As a first step, have a complete medical examination by your doctor who may refer you to a physician specializing in the treatment of incontinence, such as a urologist or a gynecologist.

When does menopause start and what changes can I expect?
Menopause is a natural part of the aging process. It occurs slowly over a period of time. Eighty percent of all women will go through menopause between the ages of 48 to 53. For many women, the decrease in the hormone estrogen causes symptoms and changes in the body, many of which can be treated effectively.

The most frequent symptoms of menopause include:
  • Hot flashes- a sudden feeling of heat that spreads over all or part of the upper body. Some women will experience hot flashes for a few months, others for a few years. Some will not experience them at all.
  • Changes in the vagina where the lining may become thinner, less flexible, and more dry. This can cause pain during sexual intercourse.
  • Emotional changes such as nervousness, irritability or depression. These feelings may be linked to hormonal changes. If they persist you should talk them over with your doctor.
  • Bone thinning (osteoporosis), the major cause of broken bones in older women. Effective ways to combat osteoporosis include increasing calcium in your diet, engaging in weight bearing exercises and hormone replacement therapy.

Should I consider taking hormone replacement therapy?
The main goals of hormone replacement therapy are to relieve the symptoms of menopause, prevent osteoporosis and protect against heart disease. There are both risks and benefits to hormone replacement therapy. If you are considering hormone replacement therapy, we suggest that you discuss it with your doctor.
