Minimally Invasive Cardiac Surgery – A Boon In Today’s Time
Mumbai,11th May, 2016 : Most cardiac surgeries are performed through a sternotomy which involves splitting of the entire breastbone. Minimally Invasive Cardiac Surgery (MICS) encompasses a variety of operations performed through incisions which are substantially smaller & less traumatic than the standard sternotomy. MICS incisions measures around 3-4 inches compared to 8-10 inches in standard sternotomy.
The advantages of MICS include:
1. Smaller incisions & scars
2. Reduced infection risk
3. Less pain & shorter hospital stay
4. Fewer physical restrictions post operative & shorter recovery time
Recently, the cardiac surgical team led by Dr. Bhasker Semitha closed a large ASD in a 28 years old lady through a lower mini sternotomy incision. This 4-5 inches incision split just the lower third of the breastbone. The surgery was conducted without much complication and was a thorough success.
This is the 5th case in past few months for which MICS was done. Other recent cases undertaken by Dr. Bhasker in SevenHills Hospital include 3 cases of Aortic valve replacement through the upper mini sternotomy & 1 case of ASD closure through a right mini thoracotomy incision.
All these patients are doing well and are on the path of quick recovery, the follow-up reports stated!
